The judogi, a symbol of this ancient martial art, is undergoing a quiet yet profound transformation. At the recent International Judo Federation technical seminar, innovations in the next generation of judogi took center stage, signaling that this essential piece of equipment is finding a new balance between tradition and modernity.
The traditional judogi, made of thick cotton, is renowned for its durability and grip. However, while maintaining its classic appearance, the new generation of judogi is incorporating high-tech materials. A leading Japanese sports brand has introduced a “smart weave” judogi that uses special synthetic fibers blended with cotton threads, reducing weight by 15% while significantly improving tensile strength and moisture-wicking performance.
“These innovations are not about abandoning tradition, but about allowing athletes to have a better sporting experience while preserving the spirit of judo,” said Kenichi Yamada, Chairman of the IJF Equipment Committee. The new materials maintain the traditional grip in key friction areas, which is fundamental for executing judo techniques.
Safety is another major focus of improvement. The new judogi employs reinforced weaving technology at high-stress areas such as the collar and cuffs, reducing competition interruptions caused by garment tears. Meanwhile, enhanced sewing techniques provide a better fit to the body’s contours, lowering the risk of fingers getting accidentally caught.
Environmental sustainability is also making its way into judogi manufacturing. Several European manufacturers have begun using organic cotton and recycled materials, with some products already containing up to 40% sustainable materials. The French national judo team fully switched to eco-friendly training wear earlier this year.
Despite continuous technological progress, respect for tradition remains strong within the judo community. International competitions still require judogi to be purely white or blue, free from any commercial logos, preserving the purity of the sport.
With the 2024 Paris Olympics approaching, national judo teams worldwide are evaluating these new technical uniforms.
